A 69 hour course consisting of: a three day Practical/Theory course (normally two days plus one) plus Home Study and an assessment at the candidates Club/School. The course is designed to assist Level 1 coaches, very experienced ‘Shinty’ people and experienced PE Teachers to be a Head Coach at Youth and Senior level.

The Camanachd Associations coach education programme is supported by sportscotland. Thanks to ongoing investment in the game, UKCC courses can be offered at a subsidised cost. UKCC courses focus on more detailed technical and tactical knowledge and enhanced coaching skills.
The UKCC Level 2 in Coaching (Shinty) is a 69 hour course, taught over three days and one evening, which features a mixture of practical-based exercises and home study tasks. It includes opportunities to coach (fellow coaches on the three day course and your own players in the evening club visit). The aim of the UKCC Level 2 course is to enable you to prepare for, deliver and review coaching sessions to a group of players, as a club coach or teacher.
Is the UKCC Level 2 suitable for me?
To qualify for entry to Level 2, candidates should possess one of the following:
1) UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Shinty
2) A previous CA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Shinty
3) A qualified PE teacher with a CA CPD/In-service certificate or an appropriate shinty coaching background.
All Candidates must demonstrate a current active involvement with the coaching or teaching of shinty.
A Level 2 Diploma is under consideration to encourage coaches who attain a UKCC Level 2 qualification to continue their development. This will be based around an individual needs analysis for each coach.
UKCC Level 2 Course Information
On successful completion of Level 2, candidates should be able to:
• develop an appreciation of the ethical coaching process, the needs of the player and related issues in sports science
• plan, conduct and evaluate a series of shinty coaching sessions in a systematic and progressive manner
• coach the basic skills and techniques of shinty including, defence, attack & continuity.
• promote and establish positive working relationships and high standards of behaviour with – and among – players, other coaches, parents and officials in the overall development of shinty
• ensure the health and safety of players and others within the coaching environment and be able to respond to accidents and emergencies
• develop greater responsibility for their own learning and development promote the sport of shinty in a positive and constructive manner
• demonstrate an understanding of the principles of development through practices and small-sided games
The course is a three day one evening course. The course is primarily practical-based, and you will be given several opportunities to coach (fellow coaches and your own players) and develop your coaching throughout the course. There are also home study tasks including the planning, delivery and review of coaching sessions.
The UKCC Level 2 contributes to the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the Level 2 National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Coaching. The NOS have been developed by people from the industry with a vast range of knowledge and experience. The standards provide a benchmark of good practice.
Successful candidates will be awarded SCQF Level 5 Sports Coaching (Shinty) by the SQA and will also receive an electronic certificate from the Camanachd Association endorsed by UKCC.
The Camanachd Association is the World Governing Body for Shinty and the SQA qualification endorsed by UKCC is the officially recognised qualification.
Assessment is competency-based allowing you to be continually assessed, receive support and complete action-planning throughout the course. Candidates must complete the home-study tasks and an open book test.
Candidates must be 18 years of age or over before they can apply for the qualification.
To qualify for entry to Level 2, candidates should possess a UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Shinty, a CA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Shinty or be a qualified PE teacher with an appropriate shinty coaching background. Candidates must demonstrate a current active involvement with the coaching or teaching of shinty
Candidates will have 12 months from the first day of the course to complete all assessments and candidate achievement record.
Individual cases where exceptional circumstances make this not possible will be considered by the Camanachd Association Coaching & Performance Development Manager.
The qualification will be valid for four years from the date it is awarded.
Coaches can revalidate the qualification by attending CPD opportunities which are provided annually.
