Newtonmore have won the 2012 Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final in a 5-4 victory over their local rivals, Kingussie.
The cup holders, Kingussie, had home advantage on The Dell’s perfect playing surface; arguably the best field in the sport, and it set the scene for one of the most enthralling cup finals in recent years.
Newtonmore started the game at high pace and were 3-0 up by the 20th minute with goals from Evan Menzies (2) and Calum Stewart. Bob MacGregor pulled one back for Kingussie, but only a minute later Calum Stewart scored his second of the afternoon leaving it 4-1 in favour of Newtonmore at the break.
At this point you would be forgiven in thinking the match was all but over, however the second half was Kingussie’s turn to take control. Savio Genini made it 4-2 in 59th minute and then ten minutes later Michael Clark brought it even closer to 4-3 and thoughts of extra time went through spectators heads.
In the 83rd minute, Newtonmore seemed to put it beyond Kingussie when Evan Menzies completed his hat-trick, however John Gibson brought Kingussie back into it yet again two minutes later making it 5-4. Unfortunately for the hosts, five minutes wasn’t long enough and that was their last goal and it finished 5-4 to Newtonmore.
Aberdein Considine Partner, Richard Street, presented the Cup and silver mounted caman to Newtonmore Captain, Evan Menzies.
The match was televised LIVE on BBC Alba and is available to watch again on the BBC iPlayer.
