Newtonmore win North of Scotland U14 5-a-sides

Newtonmore won the North of Scotland U14 indoor 5-a-side championship at MacDonald’s Dalfaber Resort, Aviemore last Saturday, 18th February.

Eleven teams which included Skye, Uist, Strathglass, Newtonmore A and B, Glenurquhart, Kilmallie, Lochcarron, Fort William, Beauly and Kingussie made up two round robin leagues from which Fort William, Kilmallie, Newtonmore and Lochcarron emerged to contest the semi finals.

A keenly contested Lochaber derby between Fort and Kilmallie was won 4 – 2 by the Town team and Newtonmore saw off Lochcarron’s challenge with some impressive finishing to win 8 – 3.

The Final was a closely contested affair although Newtonmore always had the upper hand and after half time they pressed home their advantage and ran out deserved winners by 6 goals to 2 with Sam Richardson in fine form in front of goals.

Mr. Karl Bradshaw, MacDonald’s Dalfaber Resort Leisure Manager, presented runners up medal’s to Fort William and winner’s medals and the trophy to Newtonmore.

The most tenacious team of the day was undoubtedly Uist. They travelled down from the island on Friday only for their mini bus to break down en route in Inverness. They eventually got a lift to their accommodation at Badaguish Outdoor Centre, arriving much later than planned. On Saturday they woke to find a replacement bus could not be delivered to them so they set off to walk down the road, unfortunately just as the weekend’s snow began to fall in earnest!

Fellow Islander John ‘Spod’ Macleod came to the rescue with the Skye Camanachd mini bus after dropping his own team off at Dalfaber. Newtonmore coaches Michael Ritchie and Tony Robinson returned them to Badaguish after the tournament.

On the pitch the Uist team showed the same determination and no little skill to acquit themselves very well during the competition.
