Strachur hosts Women’s Shinty Cup Finals this Saturday
Tuesday, September 4th, 2012 at 10:12AM
This weekend sees the cream of ladies shinty congregate in Strachur for the Women’s Cup Final Day.
Local junior shinty player’s kick off the action with a skills demonstration before the Marine Harvest Challenge Cup Final gets underway at 1pm, followed by the Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final at 2.30pm.
The Marine Harvest Challenge Cup is competed for by teams in Marine Harvest South Division 2 and Marine Harvest North Division 2 and contesting the final this year are Strathglass and Lochaber. Strathglass have previous form in the Marine Harvest Challenge Cup, having won the inaugural final in 2007 and being beaten finalists in 2010, but they will be pushed all the way by a strong Lochaber side that produced a stunning performance against Cowal & Bute in the semi-finals.
Aberdour and Glengarry will challenge each other in the blue riband event of women’s shinty, the Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final. This will be a re-run of the 2011 final where a 4-0 victory by the north side saw Glengarry’s Elaine Wink lift the trophy. 2012 Marine Harvest National Division 1 League winners Glengarry are clear favourites for this match, but close results in the league clashes between these teams this year mean the final could go either way.
Both matches will be held at the new shinty facilities at Strachurmore, Strachur and officiated by Duncan Kerr and Robert Baxter. The Women’s Camanachd Association would like to thank the Strachur Committee and Cowal and Bute shinty team for their assistance with this event, plus Marine Harvest and Peter Gow for their continued sponsorship of these finals.
Strachurmore boasts a brand new shinty pitch and excellent facilities, and the WCA would like to encourage shinty fans and sports enthusiasts from across Scotland and the local communities to visit Strachur this weekend and view some first class women’s shinty played in a first class sports venue.
