WCA Announce New International Coaching Team

It gives the Women’s Camanachd Association great pleasure to announce that the 2012 Women’s International Coaches will be Sarah Corrigall and Laura MacKay.  This coaching team will coach and manage a squad of 20 players who will travel to County Clare this October to face strong Irish opposition, and hopefully continue the winning success of 2011.

Sarah Corrigall of Skye will continue into her second year in the post but will be joined by seasoned Glengarry and Scotland defender, Laura MacKay who replaces Andy Mathie.  Sarah (formerly of Glengarry) has 5 Scottish caps and was the youngest women’s player ever to make her international debut on achieving her first cap.  Laura has 7 Scottish caps to her name and has coached the Women’s Under 18 North team.

On being part of the Scotland coaching team, Laura shared her excitement to be involved after so many years playing in the representative matches.  Regarding working alongside former team mate Sarah Corrigall, Laura commented, “Sarah and I have known each other and played shinty together for over 8 years now so we will make a good team and work very well together”

Sarah herself is looking forward to coaching the Scotland women’s team for the second year running and is hoping to repeat the success of 2011.  On her new coaching partner, Sarah commented, “I am very happy that Laura has joined the coaching team this year! She has been involved in all but one year of the International ties, so she knows the set up very well.”

Preparations for 2012 selection commence this coming Sunday 20th May with the first open training session being held in Perth.  There will be a series of 3 open training sessions to which all women’s players across Scotland are invited.  Following these sessions the coaching team will select a squad of 20 players in July.

Sarah is expecting a good turnout for the first training session this Sunday, “There were a large number who tried out for the team last year and I anticipate the same if not more this year as there are so many players now coming into Women’s Shinty thanks to the good work of the Women’s Camanachd Association.  Players will have to work hard for a spot on the team this year which will make it difficult for me and Laura to select the final team.”

Training will be held at 14:00 this Sunday 20th May on North Inch playing fields (alongside Bell’s Sports Centre), Perth.  All women’s shinty players are encouraged to attend.
