2018 Inter District Youth Shinty: North Retain U14 & U17 Trophy’s
The North Under-17’s and Under-14’s defeated their South rivals in two very competitive encounters at An-Aird, Fort William last Sunday. All the teams were well supported on a dry day in Lochaber where the cream of Scotland’s shinty talent was on display.
The U-14 Fraser MacPhee Memorial Cup was once again won by the North of Scotland but they were pushed all the way by an excellent and well organised South team. The first half was evenly contested with both Goalkeepers making good saves to keep the scoreline all level at the break. Marcus Plank (Bute) was proving a rock at the back for the South, and the North forward line struggled to create clear goal scoring opportunities.
The second half was equally competitive with the South looking more likely to make the breakthrough and so it proved with Coll Mackay (Inveraray) breaking the deadlock on 65 minutes with a well taken goal, giving George Taylor Ramsay in the North goals no chance. The North responded well and equalised on 75 minutes through the impressive Euan MacCormick. Play then raged from end to end with chances at both ends but neither team could force the winner. The tie was then decided by penalties, with the North prevailing by 4 penalties to two in what can only be described as thrilling encounter.
The North took an early lead in the U17 match through a goal from Skye Camanachd’s Ross Gordon and was quickly followed by goals from Gordon(2) and Kingussie’s Kieran MacPherson. The second half started in similar fashion to the first half with the North scoring within a minute from the throw-up, with an excellent strike from Kinlochshiel’s forward Duncan Matheson. The South never recovered from the early goal, and driven on by Captain William Mackinnon the North started to dominate proceedings. Further goals from the excellent Ross Gordon (2) and Martin Pringle (2) brought the final score to 8.0
Keith Loades, the President of the Camanachd Association presented the cup to the North captain William MacKinnon.
Special thanks to the MacPhee Family for their continued sponsorship of the U14 and U17 Youth representative matches. They also very kindly donated a cheque for £750 towards the 2019 National Disability Festival.
