A Question of shinty
Badenoch shinty teams and supporters are to go head to head in a pre-season challenge round the table, in the first of what is hoped to be a series of Question of Shinty quizzes.
Teams of four are being invited to join in the pre-season fun, which will test everyone’s local knowledge of the game and some more besides, at the fund-raising event for Badenoch Shinty Memories Group (BSMG). At stake, a first prize of 2 tickets to the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final and 2 tickets to the cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final.
The entry fees for the quiz, £20 per team, will be donated to Badenoch Shinty Memories Group to help with their work locally. The Quiz is due to take place in the Balavil Hotel, Newtonmore, on Thursday evening, February 27th at 7:30pm. It is hoped that up to a dozen teams will be assembled and the evening will require six teams of four to be viable.
BSMG Chair John Mackenzie said: “This should be a fun evening and we hope that we will have not only teams, but also some people who may just want to come along for a laugh and the entertainment value. Teams can be entered under any name and consist of four members paying five pounds each. It’s for a good cause locally and with the new shinty season looming large, the evening should give everyone a chance to regain their competitive edge. The quiz is open to everyone, not just shinty teams and the main thing we need is advance notice to ensure that we can set everything up.”
The quiz will take the form of a multiple-choice series of questions with visuals to test everyone’s knowledge of shinty, mainly locally, but not entirely! The quiz will be hosted by Hugh Dan MacLennan and it is hoped that if the event proves to be a success, it will be rolled out to other shinty areas where Shinty Memories Scotland is operating.
Anyone wishing to enter a team for the quiz should get in touch with BSMG through email@example.com or 07743 686270 to reserve a team place. All that is required initially is a team name. Entry money (cash, £5 per member, £20 per team) will be collected on the evening.
The 2020 Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final is set to return to The Dell, Kingussie after a 20-year absence. Shinty’s premier competition will be the pinnacle of a week of exciting events in the Badenoch area which celebrate its heritage and culture. Tickets for Shinty’s blue riband event are available now via www.shinty.com.
Shinty Memory Groups have evolved from the Sports Heritage Scotland (SHS) initiative, involving shinty’s governing body, the Camanachd Association, Alzheimer Scotland and a number of other sports. The sports' archives and other resources – including links with sports such as curling and golf - are being used to help people with dementia and people living with other mental health issues such as depression, remoteness and loneliness.
BSMG is supported with funding from the Life Changes Trust (LCT), which is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. An innovative partnership with the Highland Folk Museum, High Life Highland and additional funding from Museums Galleries Scotland has enabled the creation of an18-month full-time post initially to support work in what is recognised as a compassionate community stretching from Kincraig to Laggan and Dalwhinnie.
Shinty Memory Groups are currently operating in, or are at the planning stage in Badenoch, Caberfeidh, Cowal, Lovat, Beauly, Lochaber, Ballachulish, Oban, Taynuilt, Glasgow, Kinlochshiel. Others are expected to join the network in due course.
