One of the Gaelic Sporting World’s premier competitions returns as part of the 2019 Royal National Mòd in Glasgow when Iomain Cholmcille. the award-winning shinty-hurling international tournament for Gaelic speakers is played on Glasgow Green on Saturday 12th October.

Alba, the Scottish Gaelic shinty teams will face teams of Irish Gaelic speakers; the men will face Fir Uladh, a select from Ulster and the women will face the Cois Fharraige club from Connemara.

The Alba squads have been named for the compettion. For the first time, there will be a player from the famous Kyles Athletic club, Stewart Taylor, involved in a squad which is full of experience and ability. The men’s team is managed yet again by co-managers Angus MacInnes (GMA) and Sean MacLeod (Camanachd Leòdhais). Sean, an Iomain Cholmcille veteran since the competition began in 2007 said “Angus and I are delighted with the range of clubs represented and the talent available to us. It’s worth taking note that 18 out of 20 players came through Gaelic Medium Education, and we very much take pride in our work with encouraging shinty through the medium of Gaelic throughout Scotland, now and into the future.”

The women’s squad is managed by Catriona Gibb, originally from Skye, who is also very happy with her squad’s makeup. “We have a range of people educated through the medium of Gaelic but we also welcome in a good number of people who have learned Gaelic and are contributing to Gaelic education. It shows the level of interest there is in Gaelic in the women’s game.”

Eoghan Stewart, the co-ordinator for Iomain Cholmcille in Scotland said. “We are very thankful to Graham MacDiarmaid from Mòd Ghlaschu, An Comunn Gàidhealach itself, and everyone involved with this historic Mòd for initing us to hold Iomain Cholmcille in Glasgow yet again after five years from the last Glasgow competition in 2014.
