The MacPherson Cup for North of Scotland secondary schools took place last week (Tuesday 12th June) at Braeview Park, Beauly. Four schools were in attendance; Lochaber, Charleston, Dingwall and Kingussie.
Each team played each other once with the top 2 teams progressing to the final. Lochaber came through the group stage playing well and looking comfortable, picking up 3 wins with some fantastic team play in their forward line creating lots of opportunities to score goals. Kingussie bagged the other spot in the final only losing to Lochaber in the group stage. Both Charleston and Dingwall played some nice shinty during the group stage and it was great to have them along and competing.
The final saw some excellent skill and one touch shinty being played by both teams. Kingussie, after being beaten by Lochbaer in the group stages, clearly upped their game for the final, Struan Ross was a force to be reckoned with, holding things together in the centre line. Lochaber looking like scoring on a number of occasions but the Kingussie defence did well to snuff out any chances they created. Full time was called with the game ending 0-0.
Extra time was then agreed playing to the golden goal ruling. Not even a minute into extra time a long ball was played in towards the goal from the Kingussie midfield dropping just before the goal and bouncing awkwardly over the keepers stick and into the back of the net meaning the MacPherson Cup was heading to Kingussie High School for 2018.
The Camanachd Association would like to thank all 4 schools, players and teachers for attending a very enjoyable day of shinty as well as Beauly Shinty Club (especially Niall MacLennan) for allowing us to use their excellent facilities at Braeview. Thanks also to Tina Marshall and Donna MacKenzie who took on the officiating role and did an excellent job throughout the afternoon.
Congratulations once again to Kingussie High School, winners of the MacPherson Cup for 2018.
