This Saturday, Kinlochshiel will take on Caberfeidh in the Mowi Premiership. This fixture, however, will not only be remembered as a competitive match but also as the ushering in of a new era for Kinlochshiel as they unveil a new pitch. This represents another positive move forward in the shinty community, giving players the freedom that a well-maintained surface can provide. Kinlochshiel currently sit in 3rd place and will be hoping that the new surface will help them towards a late season charge up the table.
The development of the new pitch would not be possible without the committed help of so many volunteers. Camanachd Association President and Development Director for Kinlochshiel Shinty and Community Club said, " It is very pleasing to see the new pitch being put into use. It has taken a long time and a huge amount of effort to get it built and fit for play. The new facility is a credit to all who have worked so diligently to provide a playing field which should benefit the whole community for years to come".
He added, " It is amazing what can be achieved even in a small community such as ours when a group of people with the right skill sets are assembled and apply themselves to the task. Sometimes it is just sheer determination to succeed that drives them on. Many obstacles had to be overcome during the past seven years since the offer to purchase the land was first made. It will be a proud group of people who will stand and watch the first ball being struck on Saturday. I hope that this new facility will inspire the Club to even more successes and encourage more youngsters to take up the Caman." Chris Nixon, Chair of Kinlochshiel, echoed these thoughts, stating, “he is delighted” and that the pitch was “well worth the wait”.
Time will tell if the new pitch will aid Kinlochshiel in their bid to finish at the top end of the table. What is certain, however, is that this development will help enable the sustainability of the sport in one of the of shinty’s great communities.
