Oban born Robert MacIntyre’s meteoric rise through the golf rankings has been well documented. What about Magnus Bradbury? The former Oban High pupil has become a star of Scottish rugby, famously scoring the 3rd try in Scotland’s epic Calcutta Cup comeback in March. John McPhee joins them as rising sporting stars from Oban as he takes place in MotoGP again in 2019.

With such sporting success off the shinty pitch it is no surprise Oban teams are flourishing on it. Oban Camanachd sit 5th in the Mowi Scottish Premiership, and could rise as high as 3rd if Kingussie beat Newtonmore tonight at the Dell and Oban take advantage of their games in hand. A Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-final against Kyles Athletic, coupled with an Artemis Macaulay Cup final clash with Kingussie the following week, equates to an exciting end to the season for Oban Camanachd, who have already added the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup to their trophy cabinet.
Lochside Rovers, Oban Camanachd’s 2nd team, are also performing exceptionally well this season. They face off against Glasgow Mid Argyll in the Bullough Cup Final tomorrow, in a bid to add to their Highland Industrial Supplies Sutherland Cup Final victory. Furthermore, despite being 10 points behind current Mowi South Division 1 leaders Aberdour, Lochside Rovers will be sure they can close the gap with strong performances in their 4 games in hand.
An honorable mention must also go out to Oban Celtic. Perhaps they have not reached the dizzying heights of a Camanachd Cup Semi-Final this year, however, they have held their own in the Mowi National Division this season and will no doubt be pushing for promotion next season.
In addition to all of the successes above, Oban High School plan to launch their School of Shinty in August 2019 which will add further time on task and bring new people into a proud and historic shinty community.
