A few lines to celebrate Kinlochshiel winning the Marine Harvest Premiership, 2017🌞⚾️👍🍸!!
Poem composed by Duncan Ferguson, (retired Rector (& head of shinty!) Plockton High School)
Campione, campione – Shiel have won the league!
Campione, campione was the cry that filled the air
Kinlochshiel are shinty champions – and they won it fair and square
The crowds had gone to Oban – the triumph was complete
The buses flooded southwards – it was hard to find a seat
From Glenelg, Plockton, Achmore, Inverinate, Dornie, Glenshiel and Kyle
The loyal fans assembled to cheer for Shiel in style
The goals were slow in coming till Jordan found the net
Then Keith as always was on song – accompli was the fait
A season full of victories had now reached all its glory
To add to the Macaulay Cup – one big successful story
So Scott Kennedy the skipper and goalkeeper sublime
Picked up that well won trophy for the very first time
The tactics and hard training led by the coaches and manager Johnston Gill
You could see it on their faces – such joy and what a thrill
As all the squad got medals for all that they had done
Realisation was just dawning of the premiership they’d won
So well done to all at Kirkton who play the noble game
The top team now in Scotland – what renown and fame
This is a marquee victory for camanachd players in the west
They have beaten Newtonmore, Kingussie and all of the rest
Kyles were the nearest rivals in this two horse race to the top
But could not hold a caman to the boys who will soon play nearer the Balmacara shop (!)
After 60 years of history this great club has surely earned its spurs
And any true shinty follower will say that he concurs
We remember all the stalwarts who worked so hard in years gone by
Bert and many others – we praise them to the sky
So to this team of 2017 – we raise our glass and say
You have brought us shinty honour for this and many a day!
Campione, campione! Yes, Shiel have won the league
Slàinte mhòr ‘s math a rinn sibh!
