Schools Camanachd

Consultation Process

The Camanachd Association recently carried out an extensive consultation process into all primary and secondary school based competitions. A Schools Camanachd Forum was held on the 2nd of September 2018 in Fort William. The notes from the meeting were circulated and placed on the CA Website/Facebook/Twitter for further responses by the 24th September. From all the feedback received the options for change were considered by the Camanachd Association Youth Working Group and they unanimously agreed proposals in November. The proposals were then taken to the CA Board and approved prior to the AGM in November.

The reasoning for the new changes is to extend playing opportunities to all school and club based shinty with the introduction of a new Club competition and an extended Tulloch Trophy. The changes will take effect for the 2019 season and as normal will be reviewed annually.

 2019 Schools Programme:

Governance: From the consultation process it was decided to rename the current CA Youth Working Group to the CA Youth & Schools Development Group. Representatives in the Group will cover Primary Schools – Secondary Schools – Club Youth: Primary, U14 & U17 and will include people from all four regions.

Secondary: The current format of Secondary schools competitions will remain the same for 2019 with additional Regional Festivals being run.

Primary:

Tulloch Cup: The Tulloch Cup format for 2019 will see the introduction of local based Area Groups of ~ 6 teams each who host/organise a 9-a-side tournament. The winners from each area will move forward to a regional tournament and then to a National Finals tournament. The 150 amalgamation rule will still apply.

MacKay Cup: The MacKay Cup Qualification will see Regional individual fixtures, followed by District matches and then a National Final. The big change with next year’s competition is that it will be 10 a-side as opposed to the traditional 12-a-side. The aim is that by moving to 10-a-side this will enable players to have more time on the ball and additional teams to take part who are not too reliant on introducing younger players. The 150 amalgamation rule will still apply.

CA Trophy: The 2019 season will see the introduction of the CA Trophy for Club Primary Teams. The format will see individual Regional matches, followed by District Matches and then a National Final. The competition will be 10 a-side and will mirror the MacKay Cup.

The First Shinty Indoor Winter Festivals will continue to be for individual schools – amalgamated schools within the 150 rule – amalgamated schools with the specific permission of the Development Team.

Entry Forms will be circulate by the Development Team in January 2019
