Surviving and Thriving - The Fifth Quarter-Century of the Camanachd Association

Surviving and Thriving - The Fifth Quarter Century of the Camanachd Association by Steven MacKenzie

“Surviving and Thriving”. Many within the shinty community will find this a provocative title for a book celebrating the last 25 years of the Camanachd Association. This is deliberately so. Author and current Vice President of the Camanachd Association, Steven MacKenzie shared this during the launch of the book at this years cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final. Steven continued that few would dispute that shinty had challenges to face, but many of these are common to all sports, with minority sports facing more than most.

Steven continued that even the most pessimistic critic of the Association would surely acknowledge that we have moved a long, long way in the last 25 years? This book does not feature the winners of the last 25 years. Their achievements have been captured in the roll of honour and celebrated by the media of the time. Rather, this book focuses on the changes that have happened in the governance and administration of the game. While any such undertaking cannot mention every development, or the individuals behind them, it lets the people who drove and implemented the change tell the story in their own words.

Surviving and Thriving captures the changes made during the Association’s fifth quarter-century and arguably, given the radical nature of some of these, they match, or even eclipse, the successes of the first 100 years.

Chief Executive Officer for the Camanachd Association Derek Keir said "Much like many clubs the Camanachd Association are also the benefactors of the incredible efforts of many volunteers. In regards to Surviving and Thriving we are indebted to Steven for this incredible piece of work and the time offered to see it through to completion. One of the most unique attributes that shinty and our communities possess is their connection to the past and last year Steven took on his third project writing about shinty's history and it is to his great credit that he managed to deliver this book and coordinate a wider group of volunteers to support with this accomplishment. Our thanks go to all that supported and above all to Steven who made this book possible"

Surviving and Thriving is available for £10 now by contacting the Camanachd Association on 01463 715931 or emailing admin@shinty.com with your name and address. Please find below an extract from BBC News where Steven is discussing the new book with Eilidh Davies.
