Last week (Thursday 17th May 2018) saw the North round of the Tulloch Cup played at a very sunny Bught Park, Inverness.
A fantastic number of entries meant that 16 school teams, amounting to 180 participants (160 boys and 20 girls) were competing for a chance to play in the Tulloch Cup Final. Schools were welcomed to the event and split up into their round robin groups for the day. Three pitches with 5 schools on pitches 2 and 3, and 6 schools on pitch 1 ensured a simple format with each team playing everyone in their group.
Some excellent shinty was played through the group stages with worthy skill levels, enthusiastic coaches and smiling participants. The top team from each of the 3 groups as well as the best runner up progressed to the semi-finals.
After the round robins had been completed Balnain, Inverlochy and Strathpeffer all progressed to the semi-finals as outright group winners. To determine the last semi-final spot a play off between Beauly/Ferintosh and Newtonmore took place with the Beauly/Ferintosh team taking the win with a golden goal in the 4th minute of the game.
George Fraser, CEO of Tulloch Homes was on hand to draw out the two semi-finals from a hat. Balnain came out first and were drawn against Inverlochy, Strathpeffer against Beauly/Ferintosh was the second semi-final. Both games were extremely close, with Inverlochy beating Balnain 2-1, despite a last minute come back goal from the Balnain team. Beauly/Ferintosh overcame Strathpeffer 1-0 with an excellent goal, Strathpeffer just couldn’t pull a goal back, hitting the post and the crossbar during the game.
The CA would like to thank George for coming along for the day, it was great to have his support.
The final was an extremely close affair, Inverlochy Primary just edging out the Beauly/Ferintosh in the end and running out 2-0 winners. A fantastic display of shinty from both schools with the Inverlochy Captain delighted to receive the north round trophy from George Fraser himself. Inverlochy will now take on Park Primary, the winners of the South competition, in the Tulloch Cup Final.
It was wonderful to see so many schools taking part at Bught Park, fantastic attitudes and sportsmanship by all of the young people involved in the day. The CA would like to thank all of the coaches, parents and teachers who committed their time to bringing pupils to the event and coaching throughout the day, it was very much appreciated.
We would also like to thank the young referees, goal judges and score runners who gave up their time to help make the event a success; Ross MacKinnon, Connor MacGregor, Jordan MacKenzie, Finlay Coleman, Zander Michie, Joe Donald, Liam Borthwick, Sean Fraser, Finlay Calder, Donna MacKenzie, Joe Embleton, Ellie MacKinnon, Iain Hunter, Amber MacKay, Dylan Hercher, and Hannah Johnson. Jeya Calder and her ‘tea team’ must also be mentioned and thanked here, providing drinks and snacks all day to the players, spectators and volunteers. Iain Cochrane and Norman Strachan for taking some fantastic photos and videos from throughout the day. Last but not least a huge thank you has to go to Mike, the groundsman at Bught Park for keeping the pitches in excellent order for the event.
A fantastic day all round
